COULOMB INSTABILITIES IN METAL CLUSTERS BEYOND THE RAYLEIGH LIMIT INDUCED BY HIGHLY CHARGED IONS H. Lebius, T. Bergen, F. Chandezon, C. Guet, B.A. Huber, A. Pesnelle, S. Tomita D\'epartement de Recherche Fondamentale sue la Mati\`ere Condens\'ee, Service des Ions, des Atomes et des Agr\'egats, CEA-Grenoble, 17, rue des Martyrs, F-38054 Grenoble Cedex9, France Stability and decay of charged clusters depend on the charge state and the internal energy of the system. Above a critical charge infinitesimal small quadrupole fluctuations cause fragmentation of the charged cluster. We present new experimental data on Coulomb instabilities, resulting fragment distributions and the corresponding fragment kinetic energies.
