RECOMBINATION OF LOW-ENERGY ELECTRONS WITH MULTICHARGED IONS
VIA CHAOTIC MULTIPLY-EXCITED STATES: A STATISTICAL APPROACH

Electron capture into multiply-excited chaotic states of the compound ion
produces strong enhancement (100 times for Au25+) of recombination rates
of many-electron multicharged ions with low-energy electrons. The high
density of such states ensures a ``quasicontinuum'' energy dependence of
the recombination rate, in agreement with recent experimental findings.
