Most of the ordinary matter observable in space is in the hottest
state of matter called plasma. Electromagnetic spectra of various
wavelengths emitted from atoms, molecules and ions in such plasmas
are actively studied in the fields of fusion energy development,
astronomical observation and plasma applications.
In the first half of this lecture, the structure of atoms and
molecules, their interaction with electromagnetic waves, the basics
of collision processes, and plasma kinetics and radiation transport
models are studied. In the second half, examples of research in the
upper atmosphere, space plasma, fusion plasma, laser-produced
plasma, and various types of applied plasma will be introduced.
The goal is to provide students with an understanding of the basics
of quantum processes in plasmas, interactions with electromagnetic
waves, and plasma spectroscopic models, and how atomic and molecular
processes are used in a wide variety of plasma research.
